Tim Tebow’s NFL dreams just hit another speed bump. According to ESPN, the controversial quarterback has been released by the New England Patriots.

Tebow, 26, signed a two-year contract with the Patriots in June. As NFL.com reports, the former Heisman Trophy winner struggled throughout the preseason, completing just 11 of 30 passes for 145 yards, with two touchdowns and two interceptions over three appearances.

The move was announced on the final day that teams are required to slim down their roster to 53 players.

On Thursday, Tebow spoke to reporters about his chances of making the team. "I'm blessed, because of my faith, that I don't have to worry about the future because I know who holds my future," Tebow said. "It's something I try to live by. It really gives you a lot of peace in whatever circumstance I'm in."

According to ESPN, Tebow’s cut from the team comes as no surprise, considering the fact that the Patriots already have already solidified the quarterback position with the presence of Tom Brady and backup Ryan Mallett.

Earlier in the week, Patriots owner Robert Kraft told reporters that while he hoped Tebow would make the team, the ultimate decision would be made by head coach Bill Belichick. "I'm rooting for him big time," Kraft said. "I'm in his corner, but I have the privilege of letting Bill make those decisions. He has a pretty good record doing it.”

‘‘Whatever we do will be whatever we think is in the best interest of this football team, the 2013 team, whatever that is at any position,’’ Belichick said.

Tebow’s release from the Patriots puts his NFL career in doubt. He was drafted by the Denver Broncos in 2010 and spent two seasons with that team, before being traded to the New York Jets in 2012. After a disastrous season in New York, Tebow found himself competing for a spot on the Patriots roster to kick off their 2013 campaign.

According to ESPN, Tebow can clear waivers since he has played fewer than four seasons in the NFL. Once that happens, he will be a free agent and can sign with any team in the league.

Time will tell what Tebow’s next move will be.
