Towel Day is observed every year on May 25 to honor famous author Douglas Adams' science fiction series “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.”

The first Towel Day was celebrated on May 25, 2001, two weeks after the death of Adams Douglas as a tribute to his works. On Towel Day, fans of the author carry a towel with them everywhere they go.

The importance of towels was first introduced in Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy in its original radio series in 1978. The follow-up book by the author also explained the importance of towels.

“A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have,” Adams wrote in his book.

People across the world now celebrate Towel Day by posting pictures of their towels with a #TowelDay hashtag on social media. Some fans of the author go to work with their towels, host parties and serve drinks as described in the Hitchhiker series.
