KEY POINTS

  • Tottenham has purchased Cristiano Romero from Atalanta
  • Manchester United is one of the favorites to land the Argentinian defender
  • Tottenham will now have time to focus on other matters after this solid signing

The transfer window is set to close on the 31st of August, and many clubs have either finished or are currently finishing up their transfer moves.

For the Tottenham Hotspurs, the team is currently experiencing some turbulence as vice-captain Harry Kane decided not to show up to training camp yesterday after he had an extended break due to his participation in the 2020 European Championship.

However, that does not mean that Tottenham is done with continuing to build around him despite Kane’s want of forcing his way out of Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

To that end, the club pulled off a surprise signing of world-class Atalanta defender Cristiano Romero.

According to transfer news maestro Fabrizio Romano, Atalanta accepted Tottenham’s €50 million ($59.4 million) bid, including €5 million ($5.9 million) worth of bonuses.

Romero was also linked to a move to Barcelona for some time but the transfer guru shot those notions down as he said that they “have never been in the race”.

The club that got surprised with the news is most definitely Manchester United.

In early July, it was reported that last year’s runner-up to the English Premier League title had their sights firmly set on signing the Argentinian from Atalanta as a way of shoring up their defense.

When they were able to purchase Raphael Varane from Real Madrid, the Red Devils saw Romano as an important piece who can come in and out of the rotation.

This move certainly does deflate their plans a little as they will now need to search the market once again for a defensive-minded player.

Romero should be a great piece for Tottenham to have as the 23-year-old can definitely anchor the Tottenham defense after Toby Alderweireld has decided to play soccer in Qatar.

The deal is still pending on Romero’s physical, which is slated to happen either this week or next week.

But the club is certainly targeting another transfer target, possibly Serbian striker Dusan Vlahovc.
