Trump Announces ‘AI Force.’ Vows To Protect Industry From Being ‘Stifled.’

President Donald Trump announced he would create an "AI Force" and appoint an AI "czar" in apparent response to concerns about the technology's development and the chance it could go rogue.

In the lengthy social media post, Trump framed concerns about AI development as partisan politics.

"Over the years, there have been many Hoaxes, all generated by the Radical Left Dumocrats, for purposes of destroying our Country. RUSSIA, RUSSIA, RUSSIA, UKRAINE, UKRAINE, UKRAINE, Global Warming, Impeachment Hoax #1, Impeachment Hoax #2, Men in Women's Sports, Transgender for Everyone, and now, the decimation, or destruction, of AI," Trump wrote.

However, that concern extends to the U.S. population. A recent Politico poll found that two-thirds of Americans rate AI's potential to destroy humanity as "moderate." The poll also found that concern crossed party lines.

In his statement on Truth Social, Trump focused on the potential impact of the economy if AI development slowed.

"We will not in any way hinder or stifle the Growth of this incredible Industry. Rather, we will cherish it, help it, and watch over it, as it grows! However, we will also be looking for BAD, and we can do that, very easily, with our already existing Criminal and Civil Justice System. For this purpose, I am forming the AI Force, much like I did Space Force, which has been a tremendous SUCCESS, in my First Term," Trump wrote.

Although grassroots opposition to data centers has popped up around the country as residents worry about the potential impact on energy costs, water usage, and noise, worries about AI development have come from some of the industry's biggest leaders.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said last week that the potential risks of AI are real and should inform the pace of its development. The call was echoed by other top industry leaders.

"[L]ike many technologies before it, AI brings risks, and because it is such a powerful technology, these risks are serious," Amodei wrote. "They include the risk of losing control of AI systems, misuse of AI for cyberattacks and bioterrorism, and serious economic disruption. A race to the bottom, spurred by commercial incentives, can make these risks more acute."

"We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models. Progress will still seem fast, and we must make wise use of the time we gain," he said.

Trump ended his post on social media saying that he'd be looking for an AI "czar."

"To that end, I will be announcing, in the near future, the AI 'Czar' — Only High I.Q. individuals need apply! AI is the next Industrial Revolution, or Internet, but will be even larger and more impactful, possibly as much as 25% of our Country's GDP. We are leading China, and the rest of the World, and I intend to keep it that way!"
