KEY POINTS

  • McGregor-Khabib 2 possible to happen soon
  • McGregor is set to face Donald Cerrone next month
  • Khabib will be putting his undefeated record against Tony Ferguson on April

UFC President Dana White is optimistic that a rematch between Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov will be happening “pretty soon”. McGregor is set to officially return to the UFC next month against Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone.

In an interview with Adam Catterall of BT Sport, White said that a possibility of having the two fighters slug it out for the second time is possible but they have to finish their own businesses first. “If Conor can get through “Cowboy” and Khabib can get through Tony, then we’d be looking at a rematch with Conor and Khabib down the line here pretty soon,” White said.

The 31-year old fighter from Dublin, Ireland will be facing Cerrone in UFC 246 in T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV. McGregor is coming off a submission loss against Nurmagomedov in the fourth round more than a year ago and was involved in off-the-ring controversies while Cerrone was also coming off a loss against Justin Gaethje three months ago on UFC Fight Night 158.

Khabib, on the other hand, will be expected to headline the UFC event happening on April 18 inside Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY against Tony Ferguson. The 31-year old Russian will be putting his 28-fight unbeaten run against Ferguson. The California-born Ferguson is on a streak of his own, winning his last 12 fights – the last one was a TKO victory over Cerrone in UFC 238 last June.

MMA Fighting reports that other than his rematch with Khabib, “The Notorious” is also eyeing to compete against the current BMF champion Jose Masvidal. Masvidal, who won the title against Nate Diaz, is open to the idea of fighting the Irishman soon.

That fight, however, is at the back of White’s mind right now as he will just consider having the two face each other once McGregor overcomes the Cerrone challenge. “Conor was interested in Masvidal, too, but I think he wants Khabib first at 155,” he said.
