“The Walking Dead” will come to an end in 2022 after an extended Season 11, AMC announced on Wednesday, Sept. 9.

According to the network, the final season of the zombie apocalypse drama will have 24 episodes instead of the usual 16, Deadline reported.

AMC also announced a new “The Walking Dead” spinoff starring Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride in their roles as Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier, along with an anthology series called “Tales of The Walking Dead” about various characters in the “TWD” universe.

These shows are set to premiere in 2023.

“The Walking Dead” premiered on Halloween 2010 and was once the highest rated show on the small screen. Although its ratings have dipped, “The Walking Dead” still has a dedicated following.

“It’s been ten years ‘gone bye;’ what lies ahead are two more to come and stories and stories to tell beyond that,” chief content officer Scott M. Gimple said.

Angela Kang, who took over as “The Walking Dead” showrunner from Gimple at the start of Season 9, will be heading the new spin-off starring Reedus and McBride.

“I look forward to digging in with our brilliant writers, producers, directors, cast and crew to bring this epic final chapter of Robert Kirkman’s story to life for our fans over the next two years,” Kang said.

“‘The Walking Dead’ flagship series has been my creative home for a decade and so it’s bittersweet to bring it to an end, but I could not be more excited to be working with Scott Gimple and AMC to develop a new series for Daryl and Carol,” the EP added.

The drama, based on the comic books by Robert Kirkman, is expected to end with the Commonwealth storyline, similar to what was featured in the comics.

However, the fate of Andrew Lincoln's Rick remains unclear.

In the comics, Rick is killed off during a fight with the Commonwealth, and a 25-year time jump shows the rest of the heroes living peacefully in the settlement. In the TV series, Rick is missing after being picked up by a mysterious helicopter.

It has been confirmed that Rick is not dead as a movie centering on Lincoln’s character is in the works. Rick’s son, Carl, is alive in the comics, but the character was killed off in Season 8 of the AMC drama.

It’s also safe to assume that the series won’t be featuring the 25-year time jump due to the spin-off featuring Daryl and Carl, The Wrap noted.
