The Dow and S&P 500 slightly added to gains on Wednesday after the Federal Reserve renewed a promise to keep interest rates low for an extended period and sounded more upbeat on the economic recovery and jobs.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> gained 45.72 points, or 0.42 percent, to 11,037.71. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> rose 6.25 points, or 0.53 percent, to 1,189.96. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> shed 1.60 points, or 0.06 percent, to 2,469.87.
