Stocks slumped at the open on Wednesday after weaker manufacturing data from China and a gloomier growth outlook from the Federal Reserve underscored a lackluster global economic recovery.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> lost 170.15 points, or 1.60 percent, to 10,474.10. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> shed 17.37 points, or 1.55 percent, to 1,103.69. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> dropped 48.52 points, or 2.13 percent, to 2,228.65.
