KEY POINTS

  • Amazon Prime Day event is set for Tuesday and Wednesday
  • Competitors such as Walmart and Best Buy are starting their Black Friday discounts early
  • The companies want to cash in on the discount hype

Amazon’s much-awaited Prime Day sale went live Tuesday following months of delay from its usual July slot due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The retail giant’s annual shopping extravaganza features deep discounts, which bump up sales for the company. In 2019, sales during the two-day shopping event exceeded 2018’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales combined, CNN quoted Amazon as saying.

But this time, Amazon is not alone in rolling out attractive discounts. Its competitors, like Walmart and Best Buy, are also entering the battleground with deals of their own. With COVID-19 hurting their sales and the looming possibility of Black Friday sales not being as successful as in the past, the companies want to cash in on the discount hype.

Here are deals to watch out for during the week:

Best Buy

Electronics retailer Best Buy is promising customers dozens of deals over Tuesday and Wednesday. People will also get a refund of the difference if the price of their sale drops before the actual Black Friday sale. This is just part of the many deals the company is planning during the upcoming holiday season.

Target

Target is also launching its "Deal Days" Tuesday to start its holiday season, during which the company promises to have a million more fresh deals than last year. The retailer had said in its annual report 2019 they received a great response for their Deal Days event last year, and hopes for the same this time.

Discounts include 10% off laptops and 10% off home theater products. During the actual Black Friday in November, Target will roll out new deals on electronics and other items every day.

Walmart

Promising an "all-new Black Friday experience", Walmart got ahead of its competitors and started its discount bargains Sunday. Walmart’s "Big Save" event will run until Thursday, offering deep discounts on electronics and home goods.

Electronics like TVs are on sale including the 65-inch VIZIO Class 4K UHD Quantum Smartcast Smart TV HDR M-Series priced at $698 (down from $749) while the 32-inch Sceptre Class 720P HD LED TV is for $88 (down from $149).

In Apple products, the Straight Talk Apple iPhone 7 with 32G prepaid phone will go for $199, the Apple Watch Series 3 for $169 – a price break of $30, and the Apple AirPods Pro earbuds for $199 (down from $249).

BJ’s Wholesale Club

On Tuesday, the membership-only warehouse club is starting its holiday deals called the "Beyond Amazing Savings Event". Like its competitors, it will offer huge discounts and deals on electronics, toys, and small home appliances, both online and in its stores. The club's Black Friday sales will continue through November.
