The Washington Football Team announced on Twitter Tuesday that the wait for a name change is over, and the team will be revealing its new name on Feb. 2.

Team President Jason Wright wrote a blog on Tuesday discussing the name change and stated why The Washington Football Team will not become the Washington Wolves or RedWolves, as fans have suggested.

“Trademarks held by other teams would limit our ability to make the name our own. And without Wolves, variations like RedWolves wouldn't have been viable either for these and other reasons,” Wright wrote. “The prospect of years of litigation wasn't something that we wanted you, our fans, to have to bear as you begin to embrace a new brand.”

Wright did write that the new name to be revealed next month would align “with our values, carries forth our rich history, represents the region and, most importantly, is inspired and informed by you, our fans.”

The previous name, The Washington Redskins, was offensive to indigenous peoples of the Americas since the term "red skins" is a racial slur. So, in 2020, the team elected to change its name to The Washington Football Team until it could find a new name.
