Miss France Iris Mittenaere was crowned Miss Universe 2017 on Monday. Miss Haiti Raquel Pelissier became the first runner-up while Miss Colombia Andrea Tovar was declared the second runner-up at the event, which was hosted for the third time by the Philippines.

Mittenaere, 24, hails from Paris and is pursuing a degree in dental surgery. Her win at the 65th edition of the annual competition, which took place in Manila, marks the first European Miss Universe since 1990.

Eighty-six candidates competed with each other in the three days of preliminary interviews along with a swimsuit and evening gown presentation show before the live broadcast event. Mittenaere received the crown from outgoing Miss Universe, Pia Wurtzbach, who represented the Philippines when she won the title last year.

Monday's show was hosted by Steve Harvey despite his last year's hitch when he declared the wrong contestant Miss Universe and realized his mistake minutes later.

During the final question round, Mittenaere gave her views on the benefits of open borders when asked about the global refugee crisis.

"In France we want to have the most globalization that we can. We want to have the biggest exchange of people that we can. Maybe someday that will change but now we have open borders," Mittenaere said. "Having open borders allows us to travel more through the world and to find out more about what's out there in the world."

The newest Miss Universe revealed some of her interests during an interview, saying that she prefers beach over mountains. Mittenaere loves reading books and is a pet lover.

"Mittenaere has always been fond of extreme sports, travelling the world and cooking new French dishes. Fresh, funny and caring is how she would best describe herself. She enjoys making others happy, especially when volunteering at Bienvenue-Tongasoa and Les Bonnes Fées. Mittenaere is honored to be representing France in the upcoming Miss Universe competition," Mittenaere's bio reads on the Miss Universe website.
