Prince William was furious following his mother Princess Diana’s infamous interview with the BBC.

In the online forum platform Quora, one netizen asked why the Duke of Cambridge was mad at the Princess of Wales when she opened up about her marriage with Prince Charles. A number of royal fans shared their thoughts about the prince’s reaction.

“Prince William had been assured by his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, that she would say nothing controversial in her interview,” Deanna Eppers commented before adding that Princess Diana assured her son that she wouldn’t say anything controversial.

“She spoke in detail about Camilla being involved with her husband in an ongoing affair, and that there ‘were three of us in the marriage’, making it difficult for Diana to ever have a decent relationship with her husband, Prince Charles,” Eppers said before noting that the People’s Princess painted her husband in an “ugly light,” which upset Prince William.

“Prince William was understandably hurt, embarrassed and furious when he found out what his mother had said,” retired office manager Maggie Davy wrote.

Another user felt that Prince William’s “angry” reaction was just normal for every child. Margaret Shannon confessed that when her mother and stepfather split she was angry and if any of them would talk about it on TV she would have been “livid.”

A different user believed that Prince William’s reaction was normal for a teenager. At the time, he was boarding at Eton college and boys were allowed to watch televisions in their recreational room. Princess Diana didn’t only talk about her rocky marriage but addressed her own subsequent sex life which other boys might have talked about and caused some problems for Prince William. The effect of the breakdown of Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s marriage included public and private ridicule.

According to royal biographer Katie Nicholl, Prince William refused to speak to Princess Diana after her infamous “Panorama” interview was aired. The Duke of Cambridge’s action was “absolutely devastating” for his mom.

Jenni Bond added that the second-in-line to the throne was “desperately upset.” Prince William wasn’t the only person who reacted that way.

Princess Margaret also found Princess Diana’s “there were three of us in this marriage” statement unacceptable. Following the interview, she instructed her staff to never talk to anybody from Princess Diana’s apartment and their rift escalated into a cold war.
