A woman in India had a horrific experience when a group of men abused and paraded her half-naked through a street in retaliation for a police complaint she filed against them.

The unidentified woman, from a village in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, was pulled out of her home and paraded naked through a street Saturday. People reportedly watched in silence as the helpless woman was getting abused in broad daylight, Times Now reported.

Four suspects, identified as Mahendra Patel, 40, Shivkumar Patel, 25, Prabhudayal Patel, 52, and Ravi Patel, 20, were arrested Monday, news outlet Free Press Journal reported.

They have been booked on multiple charges, including voluntarily causing hurt, criminial intimidation, sexual harassment and house trespassing. The accused, who were from the same family, reportedly committed the crime to exact revenge on the victim who had complainted against them.

"Earlier on October 6, the suspects had come to the house of the victim in an inebriated state and created a ruckus on some issue. The woman complained about it," a police official said.

The suspects were detained based on the woman's complaint. However, they were soon released on bail. While out on bail, the suspects went to the victim's house, dragged her out and assaulted her, reports said.

In a similar incident last year, a 14-year-old girl in India was tonsured and paraded through streets as punishment for eloping with her lover. The horrific assault, which happened in the western Indian state of Gujarat, came to the attention of the officials after a video of the incident went viral on social media. The video showed the victim crying and walking through the streets, with her face blackened, in a ritual to "purify" her. The girl was then forcefully married off to another man. Police arrested at least 22 people, including family members of the victim, in connection with the incident.
