A 22-year-old woman vacationing in Florida has died after she accidentally got stuck in her hotel room window and suffocated, authorities said.

Sydney Therriault from Beallsville, Maryland was staying at the Pelican RV Resort & Marina on March 19 when she attempted to enter her hotel room through the window and died of asphyxiation.

A spokesman for the sheriff's office said initial investigations indicated Therriault was climbing through the back bathroom window when it collapsed on the middle of her body and she was asphyxiated, the Miami Herald reported.

Asphyxiation occurs when the body is deprived of oxygen which can then result in unconsciousness, suffocation and death.

Detectives from the local sheriff's office said Therriault might have attempted to sneak through the window because she did not have her hotel key with her.

“It appeared she did not have a hotel key [and] was attempting to make entry to her room via the window,” the Monroe County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Local police officers and fire rescue responders arrived on the scene at around 7:28 a.m. where Therriault was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said no foul play is suspected in the case and that autopsy results are pending.

Friends described Therriault as a selfless and free spirited soul.

“You’re [sic] free spirit to travel and help people and to see the world on your own time has helped encouraged me to go out and follow my own path,” one friend wrote on Facebook. “You will never be forgotten since you touched so many.”

Private elementary school Butler Montessori, where Therriault attended when she was a child and served in as a classroom assistant, also wrote a tribute on Facebook, People reported.

The school's Facebook post said Therriault "brought joy to everyone who connected with her."

They added, "There are many in our community who have felt the warmth of Sydney's smile and we will be processing our hurt and missing her for a long time.
