A woman in India staged her own kidnapping to marry the man of her choice after her father refused to give his consent to their relationship.

The woman later released a video featuring herself and her boyfriend in their wedding attire. The video of the fake "kidnapping," which took place in the Rajanna Sircilla district of the southern state of Telangana, showed the 18-year-old girl named Shalini being forced into a car by some men in front of her helpless father. The young woman was coming back home with her father after visiting a temple when the kidnapping incident took place, according to NDTV.

Hours later, Shalini released a video showing herself with her boyfriend, identified as Gyaneshwar, by her side. In the video, she said they married a year back but it was nulled as they were both minors. She revealed her family even lodged a police complaint against the man as he wasn't of the same caste as her.

Shalini noted she had no choice but to plan her own kidnapping as her family was opposed to the relationship and was looking for other prospective nuptial matches for her.

"We have been in love for the last 4 years. We even got married a year back. However, as we were minors, the marriage was not valid. My parents filed a case against him and took me back home," the girl said in the video, as reported by Republic World.

"My parents are not accepting him as he belongs to a Dalit family. Since my parents wanted me to get married to someone else, I asked him to elope with me. As he was wearing a mask I couldn't initially recognize him. We request protection from police and media as we have a threat from our family," Shalini added.

Telangana police officials told the outlet a case was registered against Gyaneshwar after the couple had an "informal" marriage.

Police also launched an investigation to track down the girl and 4 persons involved in the abduction. "A case has been booked and we are making all efforts to trace the kidnapped victim. There were four people involved in the incident. There was a case registered against the accused earlier for eloping with the girl as they were in a love affair. They had already performed an informal marriage. Now as they have become major, he might have taken her," police said.
