World Oceans Day is marked annually on June 8 to raise awareness and educate people on the importance of one of Earth’s most vital resources. The theme for World Oceans Day 2022 is "Revitalisation: Collective Action for the Ocean."

World Ocean Day was first suggested in 1992 during the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. The UN officially designated June 8 as World Oceans Day in the year 2008.

"It is time to realize that, to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and the objectives of the Paris Agreement on climate change, we urgently need collective action to revitalize the ocean. That means finding a new balance in our relationship with the marine environment," UN Secretary-General António Guterres said on the website.
