KEY POINTS

  • The world's tallest living dog is at 7-feet tall when standing on his hind legs
  • The dog is Freddy, a Great Dane from Norfolk, England
  • At 220 lbs., Freddy's food costs around $630 per month

A dog more than 7 feet tall when standing on his back legs would definitely make you stare with mouth agape. That is the height of Enormous Freddy, the tallest dog in the world, according to the Guinness World Records in 2017. This year, the gentle canine received distinction on his 8th birthday, and that is the oldest known living Great Dane.

A Joyous Celebration

Claire Stoneman, a resident of Weeting, Norfolk in England, and the owner of Freddy threw a birthday party on May 17 to celebrate. The huge Great Dane was joined by his sister, Fleur, who also came from the same litter and is younger by only a few minutes, Stoneman told Caters News. The online news service is a leading independent photo and news agency in the UK. “Freddy and Fleur had a great birthday party, and they both had the best time. We decorated the garden, and they got loads of their favorite treats and cuddly toys,” the owner of the giant canine added.

The canine siblings were also joined by Stoneman’s neighbor, Erin Manley, who happens to be the best friend of Freddy. Erin is seven years old and reportedly has known Freddy her entire life. Stoneman said they practically grew up together. “Erin has never known life without Freddy. She isn’t [fazed] by his height at all and has always been close to him,” Erin’s dad, Peter Manley, told Caters News.

Easily Recognizes Erin’s Voice

Before the implementation of lockdown measures due to the coronavirus pandemic, Erin reportedly would oftentimes go to visit the 210-pound Freddy at least two times each week. The young girl sometimes also gives the huge dog a phone call before going to bed. According to Stoneman, Freddy would mumble back upon recognizing Erin’s voice.

Erin’s dad told Caters news that Freddy is so big that he would tower over Erin. “…She cuddles up to him on the settee to watch television and he just towers over her, but they have a very sweet relationship,” Manley added.

Huge Appetite

To avoid large crowds, Stoneman would take him out for a walk very early in the morning. She says that everyone who sees Freddy is oftentimes shocked by his size, and some would even get intimidated. “…They say it’s like I’m walking a horse down the street,” Stoneman reveals. The Great Dane’s appetite is just as big, too. According to his owner, Freddy’s food, which consists of minced beef, roast chicken, kibble, and lots of treats, costs around $630 each month.

Despite his huge size, however, the Great Dane is kind-natured and would always put their paws on her if he thinks she’s upset. “They love cuddling and I sleep with them on two mattresses in the living room at night,” Stoneman says. Information from the Guinness World Records reveals that Freddy officially measures 3 feet and 3 inches tall to his back. He was acknowledged as the world’s tallest living dog in 2017.
