In more ways than one, the WrestleMania 35 card signifies a new era in WWE. Not only will a women’s match main-event wrestling’s biggest show for the first time in history, but none of the promotion’s top superstars from the past two decades are advertised to appear Sunday night at MetLife Stadium.

The card doesn’t feature John Cena, The Undertaker or The Rock. One, or even all of those wrestlers, could still make a surprise return at WrestleMania 35, but it’s certainly notable that the pay-per-view has a chance to go on without any of those names.

Cena’s absence is somewhat unexpected, considering he’s continued to wrestle at big shows since becoming a part-time performer. He’s largely been absent from WWE TV since WrestleMania 34, though he did compete at April’s Greatest Royal Rumble in Saudi Arabia, as well as October’s Super Show-Down in Australia. Cena didn’t appear at SummerSlam or Survivor Series, and he was pulled from the Royal Rumble after declaring for the battle royal.

The Jan. 14 edition of “Monday Night Raw” was Cena’s last WWE appearance. Filming for his latest movie has reportedly wrapped, and Cena has announced he’ll be in New York City on WrestleMania weekend for a book signing.

It’s hard to believe Cena won’t do something at WrestleMania 35. He hasn’t missed the show since winning the United States Championship at Madison Square Garden at WrestleMania 20, and the 16-time world champion even made a surprise appearance at WrestleMania 32 when an injury kept him off the card.

There are rumors that Cena will have an unadvertised match at WrestleMania 35. He lost to The Undertaker in quick fashion at WrestleMania 34.

The Undertaker’s absence from WrestleMania 35 would be big news, considering he’s been part of almost every WrestleMania for more than two decades. The Undertaker is 24-2 in WrestleMania matches, missing only WrestleMania 2000 during that stretch.

The Undertaker wrestled in four matches in 2018 with his last one coming in the main event of Super Show-Down. After teaming with Kane against Triple H and Shawn Michaels, The Undertaker could be done wrestling for good. He’s been doing interviews out of character, something he rarely did since making his WWE debut nearly 30 years ago, and he’s set to appear at AEW’s Starcast 2 next month.

Unlike The Undertaker and Cena, The Rock hasn’t had an advertised WWE match in six years. He lost the WWE Championship to Cena in the main event of WrestleMania 29, which also took place at MetLife Stadium.

The Rock technically had an impromptu match at WrestleMania 32 against Erick Rowan that lasted six seconds. That marked the The Rock’s last appearance on WWE TV.

The Rock made a WrestleMania appearance each year from 2011-2016.

There has been speculation that The Rock could show up Sunday night, possibly during Elias’ performance. The Elias segment is also a spot for a possible interruption by Cena.

If you’re watching WrestleMania 35 Sunday, it might be safe to assume that Cena will have a role in some form. Appearances from The Undertaker or The Rock, however, are not nearly as likely.
