China's Xiaomi Corp said it was building an automated factory in Beijing with a capacity to manufacture at least 1 million 5G-supported smartphones in a month.

The yet-to-be-named factory being built in the Beijing Economic and Technical Development Zone is expected to be complete by December, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun said In a press release on the sidelines of the World 5G Convention.

The factory will be powered by an advanced 5G network. The CEO said that they expected to produce 60 smartphones per minute in the new factory, at a rate that was at least 60% faster than the current production rates of most companies.

Xiaomi plans to launch at least 10 smartphone models running on 5G through 2020, Sohu China reported. During the first half of the year, Xiaomi will release mid-range to upper mid-range models priced around $285.

The World 5G Convention 2019 kicked off in Beijing earlier this week, showcasing future plans of the biggest tech and mobile companies for the next generation of mobile network technology.
