Ten people were killed and two injured on Saturday when an unsound four-story building collapsed in Delhi, reports India Today.

"Ten people, including five children and three women, have been killed in the building collapse, while two persons have been injured. Rescue operations are still on and debris is being removed," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Madhur Verma.

The two injured victims of the collapse were pulled from the debris and are now being treated at a local hospital. An additional 50 people were initially feared to be trapped under the debris of the 50-year-old building.

Authorities say they are investigating the incident. NDMC officials believe construction work occurring at an adjacent building may have contributed to the collapse.

"The building collapsed suddenly, according to statement of eyewitnesses," Fire and Rescue Services Joint Director S. Vijayasekar said.
