James Cole (Aaron Stanford, pictured here) learns that the Witness is his son in “12 Monkeys” Season 3. Ben Mark Holzberg/Syfy

How exactly will time-traveler James Cole (Aaron Stanford) react when he learns that the Witness – the man responsible for triggering the apocalypse and collapsing time itself – is his and Cassie’s (Amanda Schull) son? That’s a crucial question answered in a new Season 3 trailer of Syfy’s “12 Monkeys.”

In the video, Cassie tells Cole the truth about the Witness’ identity. “The man behind the apocalypse is my son?” he asks the virologist. Of course, he is shocked. Even Dr. Katrina Jones (Barbara Sukowa) and Cole’s best friend Ramse (Kirk Acevedo) soon learn about the identity of the Army of 12 Monkeys’ leader. “This whole time it’s been about them,” Katrina chimes in the trailer.

Worse still, Cole blames himself for how his son turned out. “If there’s something wrong with him, he got it from me,” he tells his pregnant lover. Oh, Cole it isn’t your fault your son became the harbinger of the apocalypse and wiped out humanity with a deadly virus!

Shockingly, we see a glimpse of a grown-up Witness who meets his mother and father. The video ends with him removing his creepy mask but, unfortunately, we don’t see him face.

Aside from revealing certain spoilers of Season 3, the new “12 Monkeys” trailer also gives us our first glimpse of Christopher Lloyd’s character who plays Pallid Man’s (Tom Noonan) father and the recruiter of the Army. In fact, we will learn about the origins of the Army. There is also a fun, 1980s themed-episode in store for fans in the upcoming season.

Season 2 ended with a pregnant Cassie splintering to 2163 and being abducted by the Army. They have kept her locked in Titan, a city that can travel through time. There, she will give birth to the witness.

“12 Monkeys” Season 3 premieres on Friday, May 19 from 8 to 11 p.m. EDT on Syfy. All 10 episodes of the season will air through the weekend until Sunday, May 21.
