Police seized more than 300 guns, including 85 handguns and 230 rifles and shotguns, from Long Island homeowner James Steiner, who lives around the block from a high school.

Steiner 66, of Centereach, N.Y., was arrested and charged with criminal possession of a weapon in January, but authorities first disclosed the arrest Thursday, according to NBC New York. He is free on bail amid allegations that he was running an illegal gun business.

Steiner, who lives near Centereach High School, was arrested after an undercover officer visited his home while claiming he needed his gun repaired, and discovered the cache of 300 firearms. The officer was acting on a tip from a man who said he had gone to Steiner to service his gun.

“The guns were stored all throughout the house,” Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota told NBC New York. “He had more firepower than the detectives who arrested him.”

There were so many guns in Steiner’s home that they were strewn about the house, according to the New York Post. Five loaded guns were found in a dresser drawer, a revolver was discovered in the kitchen and a shotgun was spotted hanging above a closet, the paper said.

“Plain and simple — he should not have had these guns and the manner in which he stored these weapons is shocking,” Spota told the Post.

Steiner had a federal gun license that enabled him to buy and sell weapons but the paperwork expired in 2004.

The 66-year-old allegedly was also in possession of “auto sears,” which are used to modify rifles into machine guns, the Post reported. The devices are only considered illegal if they are attached to a gun, but they weren’t in Steiner’s case. The sears are illegal under federal law, but Steiner is so far not facing any federal charges.

Steiner is next scheduled to appear in court in April, according to WPIX.
