“Marvel’s Agent Carter” will continue to pull from the comic-book source material in Season 2. Executive producer Tara Butters revealed that Peggy (Hayley Atwell) will fight Madame Masque in the 2016 episodes. However, they had to antiquate the character to fit into ABC’s period drama.

“Here’s the thing. It’s a little hard. In the comic books, a lot of the Marvel period, there are issue rights,” Butters told /Film. “Our villain from the season is very much a Marvel villain that we co-opted a little bit like we did Dr. Fennhoff in the first season.”

In the Marvel Comics universe, Madame Masque’s timeline didn’t really intersect with Peggy’s time at the Strategic Scientific Reserve (SSR). First introduced in 1968, Masque was the daughter of an infamous crime lord and went on to follow in his footsteps. However, it appeared she was occasionally torn between good and evil. Masque was known to turn her back on her villainous bosses to help save the world every once in a while, and she even had romantic feelings for Tony Stark.

Of course, “Marvel’s Agent Carter” won’t be able to recreate that storyline because Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) hasn’t even been born yet. Meanwhile, the producers also will be changing Madame Masque’s look. The villain got her name because of a mask she wears to cover her scarred face, and the current comics have a metal mask on her face. She also wears a skintight outfit that would probably be considered a bit scandalous in the 1940s.

“I think we’ve changed the look of her a bit obviously,” Butters said. “We’ve made her an actress, which is very Hedy Lamar. She was a ’40s siren actress who was also a scientific genius, so that’s part of what we’re mining with this character.”

Madame Masque will not be the only one causing havoc for Peggy in Season 2. She’ll have to juggle multiple bad guys. “People who are fans of the Marvel comic-book universe will recognize our villain, and there’s more than one villain,” executive producer Michelle Fazekas told Entertainment Weekly in July. “We’re certainly taking inspiration from the comic-book universe, so anybody who knows that will be rewarded.”

Of course, “Agent Carter” Season 2 won’t just feature Peggy fighting villains. She’ll also get a new love interest, but audiences shouldn’t expect another Captain America (Chris Evans). “The thing we need to remember is she fell in love with the skinny Steve,” executive producer Chris Dingess told Comic Book Resources. “She fell in love with him before he became the Cap that the world knew. So when you’re coming up with a character, it’s really about finding those qualities. It’s not necessarily this hunk of a guy with a shield. It’s what's inside.”

“Marvel’s Agent Carter” Season 2 will premiere on ABC in 2016.
