Sparks fly between John Moore and Sara Howard in the next episode of “The Alienist.”

According to the synopsis for Season 1, episode 5 of the TNT series, John (Luke Evans) and Sara (Dakota Fanning) share an intimate moment. While it’s unclear what that intimate moment is, John jokingly asks Sara to marry him in a sneak peek from the episode.

The clip starts with John and Sara meeting on the street. But instead of telling Sara what he wants to say right away, John first has his boots cleaned by a shoe shine boy.

“Do you really expect me to stand here and wait while you get your boot shined?” Sara asks.

“As a matter of fact, I do,” replies John.

When Sara asks why, the newspaper illustrator candidly answers, “Because you find me handsome. And besides, I rather see it not so much as having my boots shined as offering a poor boy honest work.”

“What do you know of honest work?” Sara asks.

When John says he knows he doesn’t care for it, Sara tells him that his “slothful nature and a fondness for alcohol can be overcome with hard work and a willingness to change [his] life.”

After hearing Sara’s words of wisdom, John tells her, “I’m afraid you sound just like my old grandmother.”

When Sara replies that he should probably listen to his grandmother, John suddenly pops the question to Sara. “Very well then, Sara Howard, will you marry me?” asks John, who is obviously just joking around. “I, John Skyler Moore, take thee, Sara Howard, to be my wedded wife from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer. And to give you lots of little children who will be as lazy as me and just as stubborn as yourself.”

Since Sara knows that John isn’t being serious, she doesn’t respond to his proposal. She, however, does say that she might consider his offer if he asked sincerely.

Sara’s remark leaves John speechless. But when Sara hails a carriage, John tries to stop her and reveals what he’s really been meaning to say. “I thought we might at least have dinner together,” John says.

Unfortunately for John, Sara declines, explaining that commissioner Theodore Roosevelt (Brian Geraghty) is expecting her in the office when he arrives from a trip.

Before Sara leaves, John asks her what she would say if she proposed to her sincerely. But before Sara can answer, the carriage she’s in starts to move away.

Elsewhere in the upcoming episode, Dr. Laszlo Kreizler (Daniel Brühl) and his team learn more about the killer. Also, Kreizler seeks advice from an old mentor.

In the trailer for the episode, Sara tells Kreizler that the police already have a suspect, and this person comes from wealth and privilege.
