In the latest example of government spending gone wild, The Orange County Register reported that some lifeguards in the nearly bankrupt state of California make over $200,000 per year.
The lifeguards in question are those who work full-time for Newport Beach. There are 14 of them; in 2010, the highest paid collected $203,481 in total compensation and the lowest paid collected $98,160. These lucky public sector employees typically work 4 days a week and 10 hours per day, according to The Orange County Register.
Moreover, they can retire after 30 years of service at the earliest age of 50 and collect 90 percent of their salary and full healthcare benefits.

The compensation packages of these lifeguards were negotiated by the The Lifeguard Management Association.
