Xbox and Wii to Break Playstation Domination: Analyst

NEW YORK - Anticipation is growing as Sony and Nintendo prepare for the North American releases of their latest gaming consoles. With Microsoft already set with the Xbox 360, and a strong offering from Nintendo, some experts believe that Sony will lose its tight grip on the worldwide gaming market.

Although Sony plans to launch its Playstation 3 console in North America on November 17, with Nintendo following shortly after, Microsoft already launched its next-generation console last November. The unchallenged twelve-month advantage has given the software maker a sizeable lead.

"The winner in the next-generation console battle is likely to be the Xbox 360, which is the leader in North America, the worldâs biggest market," said Yoshiyuki Kinoshita, research analyst for Merrill Lynch.

"We forecast respective market shares at end-FY3/11 of Xbox 360 [at] 39 percent, PS3 [at] 34 percent and Wii [at] 27 percent, thus overturning Sonyâs domination of the market with its PS2-based share of 69 percent, and doubling Microsoft and Nintendoâs respective market shares."

The firm further predicts that in Japan, Sony will take the lead with a 57 percent market share, while Nintendo will take the bulk of the rest at 39 percent of the market. Figures for Xbox were not supplied.

In North America, Microsoft will hold the lead with 50 percent of while Sony and Nintendo will follow with 27 and 23 percent, respectively.

"In the next-gen console market, we see the end of any common global dominant platform," Kinoshita concludes.

I dont care what this analyst says, the ps3 is poised for world dominance. everyone with a ps1 or ps2 will get a ps3 cause its backwards compatable. thats already like 90% of the market

90%? Wow, quit kidding yourself, man.

everyone everywhere has a playstation. the worst thing is upgrading to a new system but not being able to play your old games. i think a high percentage of ps owners will get the new ps3 so you can play the newest, most cutting edge games, as well as the old ones

There they go again, exaggerating the fact that 'everyone' owns a playstation. If backwards compatability is wonderful, then I'm glad that I'm purchasing a Wii, because I can play up to 20 years of games on that fucker. (By the way, Sony has admitted that over 200 games cannot be played on the PS3 because they screwed up on the backwards-compatability)

I don't know about that PS1,PS2 compatability I just read this morning on yahoo news that ove 8,000 of their games will not be compatible. It figures Sony always does this. I think the predictions are correct and accurate, they will no longer have a control simply because there are other better options (Xbox Live).

i heard about the gaming incompatabilities but i also heard sony will just release an update via internet that will fix that problem soon. its just cause they pushed it out the door quickly, but it doesnt seem to be a long term problem

This entire article is pretty stupid. For one, they do not know how the Ps3 and Wii are going to hit the market. They are completely different, especially the Wii, than their counterparts. Releasing an article this early almost always turns out to be wrong. Specifically this one could be completely wrong for a few reasons: 1. Nobody knows how the general populace will react to the Ps3 after its initial launch. After the Hardcores are done buying up all the initial system, will it still sell with the 500-600 price tag? Nobody knows yet. 2. Nobody knows how the Wii will affect the non-gamers of our society. If it truely taps that market then the Wii won, no doubt about it. Non-gamers account for 99.5% of the worlds market, but we will only be able to tell after all the hardcores get their systems. 3. Both of these systems are profoundly different from their past-selves, therefor, market data from those are inapplicable.

Actually, I have to agree that this information will likely not hold true. While XBox may indeed have a 12 month head start on sales, from most readings, it's also inferior in specs. This is, of course, due to its early release. Microsoft "jumped the gun" so to speak, and in doing so really lost out on that last year of development that will make the PS3 and Wii something really special. The Wii will either to insanely well due to its controller, or flop entirely like Dreamcast back in the day. Ps3 is hard to say. It's release cost is WAY too high really. It's bonus is that it captures the geek subculture with its Linux. This is a big step forward for the wonderful Linux operating system as well because it should make more people comfortable with it.

a year late is quickly? Do you not remember the original release date? some of the game already out has issues like sounds, guns not showing up and some.. its gonna take more than a little patch.. theyll have to play the mircosoft card that they bashed so bad a few months ago by releasing a patch with every game..
