In reality, things go wrong. In reality television, things can go really wrong.

A scientific experiment on Discovery Channel's Mythbusters went wrong on Tuesday when a wayward cast iron cannonball plowed through two homes and a minivan in California. Luckily no one was injured, but the cannon left a path of destruction.

The Alameda County Sheriff's Office said MythBusters hosts Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage were trying an experiment to determine how fast a cannonball could travel when the duo misfired and sent the cannon in the air in Dublin, Calif.

This cannonball was supposed to go through several barrels of water and through a cinder block, and then ultimately into the side of the hill, J.D. Nelson of the Alameda County Sheriff's Department told CBS Los Angeles.

According to CBS Los Angeles, the cannonball traveled 700 yards through the front door of a home in Dublin, Calif., bounced like a pinball up to the second floor via the stairs before razing through walls in the home. CNet reported that a man, woman and child were sleeping in the bedroom the cannonball entered.

The cannon then reportedly sailed across a busy road, into a second home 50 yards away and damaged the roof.

The mother of the homeowner was scared and clueless of the accident.

It was a very loud boom; she thought a tree fell, maybe a meteor, Ming Jiang told CBS. It wasn't clear that it was a cannonball landing on the roof.

The cannon finally stopped when it burst through the window of a minivan owned by Jasper Gill.

It hit the dash, through the passenger window, Gill told CBS. I'm lucky I'm alive.

No one was injured in the failed experiment accident.

MythBusters is a Discovery Channel TV series that debunks common myths and urban legends through experimentation. Police officials said the production crew had used the space, the Camp Parks Military Firing Reservation, before though no past experiments had gone wrong.

The Alameda County Sheriff's Department is investigating the incident. Nelson, who regularly assists the production, said the cannon was used many times over the past two years.

We never even had any kind of an incident let alone anything this terrible, Nelson said in a statement.

The Discovery Channel said in a statement that all safety procedures were followed.

During the testing, a cannonball took an unforeseen bounce from a safety berm. No injuries were reported, but damage was reported in one Dublin home and one parked car, the statement read. All proper safety protocol was observed. Beyond Productions is currently assessing the situation and working with those whose property was affected.

The Discovery Channel said a senior producer reached out to victims of the wayward cannonball and will meet with their insurers, according to the statement.
