Barcelona were particularly effective on Wednesday as the Catalans advanced to the quarter-finals of Champions League with a drumming of Bayer Leverkusen at Camp Nou, 7-1.

The Catalans advanced on aggregate, 10-2.

Lionel Messi had a hat trick before the 50-minute mark, and then the Argentine star added a fourth in the 58th minute, and a fifth in the 85th minute. The other goals were scored by substitute Cristian Tello.

It was Messi's first career five-goal effort.

Leverkusen's goal came from Karim Bellarabi, who delivered a superb shot in stoppage time.

While Messi has been showered with praise for years, there is great hope for Tello, and the two-goal effort from the 20-year-old is a promising effort for a player who might expect to be a star for the Catalans.

It was a painful experience for the Bayer Leverkusen, but it could have been much worse. The Bundesliga club failed to contain multiple scoring chances by the Catalans, and simply were outmatched by Barcelona forwards, who were given more opportunities than they knew what to do with.

Barcelona took 18 shots, with 10 on goal, while Leverkusen managed just seven shots, with one on target. Barcelona controlled possession for 77 percent of the match.
