“Bates Motel” star Kenny Johnson revealed that fans can expect a satisfying ending to the “Psycho” prequel series.

In a recent interview with Comicbook.com, Johnson teased that the events in the show’s Season 5 finale are something that a lot of fans won’t see coming. “I would say mind-blowing and unpredictable,” Johnson told the news outlet when asked what viewers can expect from the finale. “You know, everyone’s already guessing but I think, yeah, mind-blowing and unpredictable.”

Johnson, who played Caleb on the A&E series, added that executive producers Kerry Ehrin and Carlton Cuse did “some really genius things” with the finale. “They have all the way through and they’re trying to stay into it,” the actor said.

Caleb’s “Bates Motel” journey came to an end in last week’s episode of “Bates Motel.” In Season 5, episode 3, Norman (Freddie Highmore) chained Caleb up in the basement of their house after Caleb found out that the motel owner killed his own mother, Norma (Vera Farmiga). But in a surprising turn of events, Norman freed Caleb at the end of the installment and told him to never come back.

Caleb ran out of the house to save himself, but before he could leave, Mother (Farmiga) took Norma’s gun and fired at Caleb. The bullet didn’t land on Caleb, but he was accidentally run over by a car driven by Chick (Ryan Hurst), causing his death.

In a blog post for Entertainment Weekly, Ehrin explained why Caleb’s death was true to his character. “In the end, it seemed right that no one should kill Caleb but his own actions,” Ehrin wrote. “He started to lose it as soon as he heard about Norma’s death. … He started to not be able to tell reality from illusion — much as he had spent a great deal of his life trying to live in the illusion that he had not attacked his sister, who he loved, in the most abusive and violating way possible. It made sense that his death should have a randomness to it, that he was running wild, not knowing where to go to save himself, until finally he is taken out of his pain, and the guilt of the pain he inflicted on others, by death.”

Although Caleb is already dead, fans may still see Johnson pop up in the remaining episodes of the series. When asked if Caleb could exist in the same capacity as Norma in Norman’s head, Cuse told Rotten Tomatoes: “I suppose theoretically. We do play a little bit with reality, but maybe not that much. I don’t want to ruin anybody’s ability to interpret the show as they wish.”

An all-new episode of “Bates Motel” (Season 5, episode 4) airs tonight at 10 p.m. EST on A&E, while the series finale airs on April 24 on the same time slot.
