It looks like Norman (Freddie Highmore) is going to target his second murder victim this season in next week’s episode of “Bates Motel.”

In the preview clip for Season 5, episode 4 of the A&E series, Norman is making out with Madeleine when Mother (Vera Farmiga) pops up right in front of him. Mother doesn’t utter a single word, but her piercing stare tells Norman how disappointed she is with him. Interestingly, the thrilling scene cuts to Mother’s hand pulling a kitchen knife out of the rack. Does this mean that Norman is killing Madeleine?

Whether or not Norman ends up murdering Madeleine in the episode, the motel manager makes it clear in the video that he doesn’t like what he has become. “I don’t want to be getting rid of bodies or have people chained up in my basement or dump people in lakes,” Norman tells Mother, who promises that she will always protect him no matter what.

As also seen in the preview clip, Norman gets a visit from Sheriff Dana Greene (Brooke Smith), who informs him that Romero (Nestor Carbonell) has escaped prison.

In Season 5, episode 3, Romero managed to run away from the authorities while he was being transferred to a work farm. Although he did break out of prison, things won’t be easy for Romero, who got shot by a young lady towards the end of the last episode. According to the synopsis for the upcoming installment, Romero continues to struggle to find safety as he plans to avenge Norma’s death.

In a recent interview with Rotten Tomatoes, executive producer Carlton Cuse said that Romero will continue “to play a key role in the pulpy crime drama [aspect of the show] as it goes through the rest of the season.”

“Bates Motel” Season 5, episode 4, titled “Hidden,” airs on Monday, March 13 at 10 p.m. EST on A&E.
