Las Vegas- “The Beguiled” is touted as a drama but according to director and screenwriter Sofia Coppola, it’s so much more than that.

During Focus Features’ presentation at CinemaCon on Wednesday, the filmmaker dishes about the upcoming summer feature alongside actors Kirsten Dunst and Colin Farrell.

Since viewing Don Siegel’s 1971 version of the film starring Clint Eastwood, Coppola said she’s been attracted to the story of a Civil War soldier who finds himself trapped in girls’ boarding school. “The movie just stayed in my mind,” Coppola said.

Years later, wanting to tell the story from a female perspective, Coppola crafted her own masterpiece and it won’t be exactly what audiences anticipate, she teased. “It takes a dark turn you wouldn’t expect,” she dished. “It’s really fun.”

Dunst, who has worked with Coppola on several hit films such as “Marie Antoinette” and “The Virgin Suicides,” said “The Beguiled” was a unique experience for her. “This movie is unlike any movie I’ve seen from Sofia,” Dunst stated.

While the cast was particularly tight-lipped about the events in the film, Farrell did reveal what it was like being the only male cast member on set. “I’m used to being around talent and strong [women],” he said, calling the ratio “favorable.”

“The Beguiled” will begin stunning moviegoers on June 30.
