The Blacklist
How does Red (James Spader, not pictured) know Tom (Ryan Eggold) on "The Blacklist"? NBC

For one and a half seasons now, the truth about Liz (Megan Boone) and Red’s (James Spader) relationship and the connection between the characters has been the central question on “The Blacklist.” In the fall finale in November, fans were rewarded with a key piece of the puzzle – the revelation that Red and Liz’s estranged double-agent husband Tom (Ryan Eggold) know each other. But how and why do they know each other? Well, the producers of the NBC drama say the answer is coming soon.

According to TV Line, series creator Jon Bokenkamp says that though the answer will not come in the show’s post-Super Bowl midseason premiere, true nature of Red and Tom’s relationship will be revealed in the second half of Season 2.

Bokenkamp told the site, “Tom clearly has some sort of past that Liz is not aware of, that involves Red. We will continue to tell that story. We don’t dive right into it in the Super Bowl episode, but that does start to bubble up later in the back half of the season.”

Fans will get the answer, but what will that answer be? That has been the big question since the last scene in the fall finale, when Liz set Tom free after holding him hostage and concealing the fact that he was alive from Red. Tom and Red met in a restaurant booth and the two vaguely discussed keeping some secret safe and Red handed over some yet-to-be-revealed item to Tom.

“The Blacklist” returns with the post-Super Bowl midseason premiere on Feb. 1 before assuming a time slot on Thursdays at 9 p.m. EST on NBC.
