Activision announced Monday that “Call of Duty: Ghosts,” the latest title in the company's multibillion-dollar game franchise, would be available for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, in addition to the next-generation consoles from Microsoft and Sony. The game developer later announced an upgrade program for future owners of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 -- buy a copy for your current system, and then trade it in for $10 when you pick up a new console.
Activision says gamers who buy the a current-generation (Xbox 360/PS3) version of “Call of Duty: Ghosts” for $59.99/£39.99/€59.99 in a addition to a Season Pass for $49.99/£34.99/€49.99 will receive a free upgrade to a PS4 or Xbox One version of the game. The "COD: Ghosts" Season Pass also includes four DLC map packs and extra multiplayer character customizations.
The “Call of Duty: Ghosts” upgrade program for Xbox One or PS4 will cost those gamers who do not wish to purchase the season pass $10/£10/€10. All physical copies of “COD: Ghosts” on PS3 will ship with a coupon code for a discounted, digital version of the game on PS4. Gamers moving from Xbox 360 to Xbox One will face a more complicated upgrade path.
Certain retailers will sell a “Xbox 360 + Xbox One Digital Combo” version of “Call of Duty: Ghosts,” which contains download codes good for both versions of the game for $69.99. Additionally, those who purchase “Call of Duty: Ghosts” through the Xbox Live Marketplace on the Xbox 360 will also be able to download a version for the Xbox One when it releases on Nov. 22 for $10.
Activision notes that all of a "COD: Ghosts" player’s stats will remain in the switch directly from Xbox 360 to Xbox One and from PS3 to PS4, and those who preordered to receive the Free Fall bonus map will also receive it on PS4/Xbox One. Those who purchase the “Call of Duty: Ghosts” digital combo will be able to keep the Xbox 360 version in addition to the Xbox One-compatible copy.
Best Buy will guarantee customers a $40 trade-in value on Xbox 360 versions of "Ghosts," and will also email a coupon for $10 off of the Xbox One version. GameStop will allow Power Up Rewards members to trade in a physical Xbox 360 copy of “Call of Duty: Ghosts” for the Xbox One version for $9.99 until Dec. 31.
Amazon guarantees a $25 trade-in value on Xbox 360 versions of “COD: Ghosts" and will also offer gamers a $25 coupon code for the Xbox One version -- making the final price to switch $10. Retailers like EB Games in Canada and the Microsoft Store will also offer similar sales. The offer does not apply to Xbox 360 owners looking to upgrade to the PS4 version of "Call of Duty: Ghosts," or PS3 to Xbox One.
