Carla Bruni-Sarkozy has stated that though she really regrets it she will not be attending the Cannes film festival for personal and professional reasons. The reason for her absence at the festival remains unknown.

It has been rumored that the 43 year old may be adding a new addition to the Bruni-Sarkozy family, though a pregnancy has not yet been confirmed.

It's possible that a pregnancy could result in less support for her husband, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, in next year's election.

Her absence comes as a surprise considering her film, Midnight in Paris, a Woody Allen film, opens the festival.

In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter Woody Allen was asked why he chose to cast France's first lady. Allen said: My wife and I were having brunch with the Sarkozys about a year and a half ago. I had never met them before.

He was very charming, very nice, and then she walked into the room.

She was so beautiful, so charming and charismatic, I said, 'Would you ever think of being in a movie?'

Allen stated that the former supermodel and songstress responded: Yes, just once in my life I'd like to do it, so I could tell my grandchildren I was in a movie.

Midnight in Paris also stars Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams and Marion Cotillard.
