Central Rand Gold Ltd. has launched legal proceedings in a bid to restart its operations, cancelled by South Africa's Department of Mineral Resources.

The department's head cancelled CRG's license late last month because the company had allegedly failed to spend enough on social programs and local economic initiatives.

CRG said Thursday it wants court permission to continue operating while its appeal of the cancellation is underway.

A court hearing date is expected in the first week of November.

CRG has also indicated it is pursuing the possibility of selling itself.
