Champignon, one of the four members of Brazilian rock band Charlie Brown Jr., was found dead in his Sao Paulo apartment Monday morning with an apparent gunshot wound to his mouth, according to preliminary reports from the Brazilian press.

Brazilian outlet Veja reported that residents of Champignon’s apartment building heard a gunshot around midnight Monday and screams from the 10th floor of the building, where Champignon (real name: Luiz Carlos Leao Duarte Junior) lived.

A neighbor told Brazilian radio that Champignon, 35, had a gun in his hand when his body was discovered.

Champignon's death has left his wife, Claudia Campos, extremely distraught; according to press reports, she is five months pregnant.

"She was upset, crying, said nothing, just screaming," realtor Benaion Alexandre, 40, who was with Campos and lives in the building, told G1. “In shock, she was admitted to the hospital at 2:32 a.m. [Monday] and remained there for more than four hours.”

The musician’s death rocked social media Monday morning, where #RIPChampignon was trending worldwide on Twitter. Most of those tweeting their sadness wrote in Portuguese.
