A black man was fatally shot by a police officer in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Tuesday, setting off violent protests in the city, CNN reported.

A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officer shot 43-year-old Keith Lamont Scott while attempting to serve a warrant for a different man at an apartment complex. Police said Scott, who was in his car waiting for his son to return from school, was armed with a gun, but family members insist he was holding a book.

Scott died at Carolinas Medical Center. The officer who shot him is also black.

Demonstrations began peacefully but quickly escalated, and early Wednesday morning, protesters shut down traffic on Interstate 85, setting trucks on fire and stealing cargo.

Much of the protesting was captured on social media, with everyone from the Black Eyed Peas to local activists sharing their thoughts on Scott’s death and the events that followed.
