Chicago PD
Burgess (Marina Squerciati) must prove the innocence of someone from her past on “Chicago PD” Season 5, episode 2. NBC

With the city seemingly settling down after a neighborhood shooting, and a refocusing of attention on an upcoming street festival, “Chicago PD” Season 5, episode 2 will quickly go from a fun day in the sun, to a complete and utter mess.

“After a van explodes during a Chicago street festival, a Muslim patrol officer Frank Toma (Ben Youcef) goes missing and evidence quickly piles up pointing to his involvement,” the synopsis for “The Thing About Heroes” teases.

The promo for the NBC series begins with an explosion going off behind Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger), while he is occupied investigating something suspicious. Although his fate after the blast is unknown, it is clear that the explosion caused a lot of damage.

Voight (Jason Beghe) is later seen talking to someone, asking if they are calling the situation terrorism. In the background, debris from various festival vendors can be seen scattered along the streets as FBI agents investigate the scene.

“A bombing mastermind could be one of their own and time is running out,” the narrator is heard saying over images of Voight and his team attempting to investigate the incident.

Towards the end of the promo, a suspect is seen in the interrogation room telling Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) that there is another attack that is going to take place.

Voight is then seen confrontinga person, one who could be behind the attack, but the man tells him he is too late. Will Voight be able to prevent another attack from happening? The sergeant is known for using off the books tactics to get the answers he needs, but there is no telling if the individual behind it all will be forthcoming with the details.

Meanwhile, after taking some time off from the Intelligence Unit in order to help her sister deal with her sexual assault in Season 4, Burgess (Marina Squerciati) is back and taking on another huge responsibility-- proving someone’s innocence.

“Burgess - who helped train Toma - is desperate to prove his innocence, even if that means going against her superiors,” the synopsis for “Chicago PD” Season 5, episode 2 says.

In the “The Thing About Heroes” promo, Burgess can be seen scrolling through someone’s laptop, where she comes across a page in another language that displays images of men with guns, perhaps tying the person to a terrorist organization.

Although it is unclear whose laptop she is going through, the detective seems to be in disbelief, which means she could be looking at Toma’s computer.

“There’s gotta be an explanation,” Burgess tells Voight as he reviews something in front of him.

On the Season 5 premiere of the NBC series, another member of the CPD, Halstead, was in the hot seat after killing an African American girl in the process of chasing down a suspect.

While the alderman in the previous episode got the city to lay off of Halstead after turning their focus on the gang leader causing trouble, it can’t be a good look for the city to go from being in the news for an officer killing a child, to making headlines over an officer following through with an act of terrorism.

Whether or not Toma is behind the incident, there is no doubt that Voight will make it his mission to bring down the person or persons who disrupted his city.

“Chicago PD” Season 5, episode 2 airs Wednesday at 10 p.m. EDT on NBC.
