It’s no secret that when “Chicago PD” Season 5 premieres, a beloved cast member will be missing. Although her absence will be felt, the Intelligence Unit will have bigger problems on their hands when one of their own is under investigation for a shooting.

“The district is in a state of change — Lindsay (Sophia Bush) has moved to New York — and the CPD is under scrutiny about the corrupt nature of its institution,” the synopsis for episode 1, titled “Reform,” teases.

In the Season 4 finale, Lindsay accepted a job with the FBI after Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) informed her there was no way she could ever work intelligence for Chicago again. While working a case and attempting to track down a missing boy, Lindsay shoved her gun into a suspect’s mouth and it was witnessed by high-ranking officers.

Chicago PD
On “Chicago PD” Season 5, episode 1, Halstead’s (Jesse Lee Soffer) career will be put on the line after a little girl is wounded from a gunshot. NBC

The cop was then stripped of her badge and in the process found out that her mother was being accused of murder. In order to save her mother from jail time, Lindsay made a deal to work for the FBI in New York.

Seeing as Lindsay was apart of Voight’s team and the unit is apart of the police department, it’s no surprise that the team is now on everyone’s radar.

“Under the watchful eye of the city, the team attempts to bust a gun deal that quickly turns dicey when innocent civilians and children get involved,” the synopsis for “Chicago PD” Season 5, episode 1 says. In the promo for the NBC series (seen at the top of this page), Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) is seen firing his weapon and is later told that he shot a little girl.

At the hospital, Halstead is seen crying and pushing away Will (Nick Gehlfuss) who tries to console him. Will the little girl make it?

In a sneak peek of “Reform,” Halstead is seen pursuing the suspects alongside Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos), but they split up to cover more ground. Jay then chases down two suspects who begin to fire at him with civilians in the area.

Halstead only fires his weapon once, hitting one suspect while the other one gets away. When he enters the building behind the suspect on the ground, it is revealed that a little girl has been shot and is bleeding out on the floor.

Upton picks up the little girl and tells Jay they need to drive her to the hospital but the sneak peek ends before the child’s fate is revealed.

“Tension erupts when Chief Lugo (Esai Morales) brings in Denny Woods (Mykelti Williamson) to review the shootout, and Halstead becomes a key player in the outcome of the case,” the synopsis for the NBC series states. In another sneak peek, Lugo and Denny are speaking with Voight in his office, informing the sergeant that the shooting is a PR nightmare.

Denny tells Voight that they are taking the matter very seriously, but the sergeant insists that Halstead followed protocol. Lugo attempts to fault Hank for carrying out a dangerous operation so close to a daycare, but Voight reveals it was an illegal daycare.

The three continue to go back and forth about who’s right and who’s wrong. Unfortunately for Jay, this could be the beginning of the end but knowing what Voight is capable of, the sergeant probably has a trick up his sleeve that will clear the detective’s name.

“Chicago PD” Season 5 premieres Wednesday at 10 p.m. EDT on NBC.
