Linkin Park’s fans and music industry peers have not yet gotten over Chester Bennington’s death, and Chris Martin is one of them.

On Tuesday, Coldplay’s frontman performed Linkin Park’s hit song, “Crawling,” during the opening night of their North American tour. Martin, 40, sang his own rendition of the popular song at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. He dedicated the song to “anyone who’s missing someone,” Us Weekly reported.

Martin removed the angst and loud dynamics in the song in his solo piano rendition, which transformed the nu-metal song into one full of melancholy.

His cover received mixed reaction from fans. Many were impressed with the emotion he expressed in his version, while longtime Linkin Park fans felt that he ruined it because they could no longer hear the spirit of the band in the cover. “Coldplay is capable of ruining even the best songs,” user thorn24 commented on the video. “This is stupid. This is why i don’t listen to coldplay,” another fan agreed.

But while some did not like Martin’s cover for Linkin Park’s “Crawling,” many fans still enjoyed it and praised the Coldplay singer for making a tribute to the late Linkin Park frontman.

“People on here saying that this cover sucks, [it’s] the sentiment that counts. Coldplay didn’t do it to match up to LP nor did they do it because they think they can cover it well. Their genre are completely different. This was done to honour chester’s memory and honestly, it was beautiful,” user Sherlocked Potterhead commented. “Dude, right on - the mark of a ‘true’ cover is making it your own, but still respecting the original... yes this was a cover, but it was also a TRIBUTE,” another one commented.

Meanwhile, Bennington’s cause of death has been confirmed by the Los Angeles coroner’s office to be suicide by hanging, despite some rumors suggesting that he was murdered. Authorities have since closed his case.

On Saturday, the remains of the Linkin Park singer was laid to rest in a private funeral in California, over a week after his death. The funeral was held in Rancho Palos Verdes with about 200 friends and family members in attendance.
