The 2013-14 college football bowl schedule is finally set, and, for the first time since 2012, the BCS National Championship game won't feature an appearance by the University of Alabama.

Bowl season kicks off on Dec. 21 with the Gildan New Mexico Bowl, and concludes on Jan. 6 with the 2014 BCS National Championship game. Heisman Trophy frontrunner Jameis Winston will lead the nation’s top-ranked football team, undefeated Florida State Seminoles (13-0), into a clash with the SEC Auburn Tigers (12-1). This year’s game will mark the final time that the NCAA’s current BCS system will be used to determine postseason matchups.

For Florida State, the National Championship game represents the culmination of a season marked by incredible highs, such as Winston’s rise to national prominence and the chance to win the school’s first national title since 1999, and lows, such as Winston’s sexual assault investigation.

Meanwhile, Auburn rode its now-legendary victory over Alabama in this year’ Iron Bowl into an impressive win over Missouri in the SEC Championship game. The Tigers’ top-ranked rushing offense is the perfect foil to the Seminoles’ high-flying, pass-heavy attack.

Still, this year’s National Championship game is just one in what promises to be a series of entertaining college football bowl games. Nick Saban’s fired-up Alabama squad will face Oklahoma in the Allstate Sugar Bowl, and they will look to finish their disappointing 2013-14 season on a positive note. Other intriguing matchups include Missouri vs. Oklahoma State in the AT&T Cotton Bowl, Ohio State vs. Clemson in the Discover Orange Bowl, and Baylor vs. Central Florida in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.
