Actor and comedian Kevin Hart was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving in Los Angeles early Sunday after allegedly driving dangerously on a freeway.

Hart was driving his black Mercedes erratically at more than 90 mph when he swerved and almost hit a nearby gas tanker on Los Angeles’ Highway 101, a California Highway Patrol officer told the Associated Press. Shortly afterward, police pulled him over. Around 4:30 a.m. local time, Hart failed a field sobriety test and was arrested, while his female passenger took a taxi home.

E Online reported Hart was taken to a Van Nuys jail, where he spent the morning. After being released on $5,000 bond, Hart immediately went into damage-control mode by taking to Twitter, both apologizing to fans and joking about the situation.

“I'm officially a thug, I spent 6hrs in jail last night...I got pulled over 3blocks from my house by a ---- head cop," Hart wrote in a tweet that appears to have been deleted, but was archived by E Online. "This cop was the worst, he knew who I was & wanted to make a example out of me...."

Hart continued to make light of the situation. After all, he is a comedian:

Alhough Hart did tweet jokes about his time in the joint and the specifics of his arrest, he also acknowledged that what he did was wrong and that driving under the influence has serious consequences. In one case, he tweeted: “On some real s--t....drinking & driving is not a game or a laughing matter. People have lost lives because of stupid s--t this.” And in another, he wrote: “This is a wake up call for me, I have to be smarter & last night I wasn't....everything happens for a reason....”
