The Dallas Cowboys might not have to wait much longer before Dak Prescott is back under center. That's at least what Jerry Jones seems to think.

In speaking with 105.3 The Fan, the Cowboys' owner suggested that he wouldn't be surprised if Prescott makes his return after missing just one more game.

"I don't know that anybody knows [when he'll be back]," Jones said. "But when he [gets enough strength in his hand], then you'll probably see some real advancement in his timeline. I don't know when that is. I do know that with a good airing out last week, everybody recognizes that he'll be back sooner than later as far as the timeline. It really could be a minimum of two weeks up here in my mind [Washington in Week 4]. Now, that's very optimistic. But he's got the kind of repair there that will allow him not to have a lot of fear of re-injuring it. It's just a question of the grip. But it's a big question."

If Prescott plays in Week 4, he'll have returned far sooner than the team initially expected.

Soon after Prescott fractured his thumb in the season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, it was reported that the quarterback could miss two months. The timeline was cut following successful surgery, though Prescott has still been expected to miss at least three games due to the injury on his throwing hand.

Jones' comments might be a little optimistic. Prescott likely won't return until the bone heals and he's not at risk of re-injury.

Whether Prescott returns in two weeks or a month, his injury might not be as devastating to the Cowboys' playoff chances as it seemed after a Week 1 loss. Cooper Rush had a 95.5 passer rating in his first start this season, leading Dallas to a 20-17 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.

Rush has a 2-0 career record as a starter.

Rush is set to start his second game of the 2022 season when the Cowboys visit the New York Giants on "Monday Night Football" in Week 3. It's Dallas' first NFC East matchup of the season.

The Cowboys host the Washington Commanders in Week 4 for a second straight divisional game. If Prescott is unable to return for that contest, there's a chance he could play in Week 5 against the Los Angeles Rams.

Dallas is scheduled to visit the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 6. It might be the Cowboys' most important game in the first half of the season. The Eagles have played like the best team in the conference, going 2-0 with the NFL's No. 1 ranked offense.

The Giants and Eagles are two of the six remaining undefeated teams.
