UFC President Dana White won’t reprimand women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey over her disparaging comments regarding potential opponent Cris “Cyborg” Justino.
During an April 18 interview with Yahoo Sports, Rousey, 27, stated that a fight against Justino, who onced served a year-long suspension for steroid use, would be bad for UFC’s women’s division. “I’ve said before, I don’t call if she’s injecting horse semen into her eyeballs, I’ll fight her, but that’s just my personal decision,” Rousey told Yahoo. “But I can’t make a decision for the whole division. I can’t say it’s the right thing.”
“This girl has been on steroids for so long and [has been] injecting herself for so long that she’s not even a woman anymore,” Rousey added. “She’s an ‘it.’ It’s not good for the women’s division. It’s not good at all.”
Rousey’s comments drew widespread criticism, as many believed that her mockery of Justino’s past steroid use was insensitive to transgender individuals. But Rousey has at least one prominent supporter in White, who defended her statement during a media session on Thursday, SB Nation’s MMA Fighting blog reports.
"There was a reporter in Canada who said he was going to call GLAAD [Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation] to see how they felt about it. Are you a f--king idiot?" White said. "First of all, she's not a transgender fighter. She's a woman, OK? What Ronda's saying is, she's taken so many drugs that she's probably not a woman anymore. She's not a transgender fighter. She didn't have a surgery. What a moron."
"I think that this is the fight business and people say mean things about each other," White added. "Is it not true? She got busted for taken winstrol. The same drug Ben Johnson took and many other athletes took, to do what? To cheat. Ronda called her a f--king cheater."
"She called her an it. [Cyborg] calls Ronda a chicken. Should Ronda be offended at being called a chicken? Grow the f--k up, everybody."
White also said that Justino’s steroid use had caused her to look like Wanderlei Silva, an MMA legend who has fought in nearly 50 professional bouts.
"I said, when I saw [Justino] at the MMA Awards, she looked like Wanderlei Silva in a dress and heels. And she did, did she not? Who wants to dispute that she didn't look like Wanderlei?” he said. "She was walking up the stairs, jacked up on steroids beyond belief and looked like Wanderlei Silva in a dress and heels."
Despite his comments, White wouldn’t dismiss the possibility that Justino may eventually fight for UFC, particularly for a bout against Rousey. "It's easy to sit there and go, 'Oh, everybody wants to see that'. She's a 45 pounder, Ronda's a 35 pounder,” he said. “She said she couldn't make the weight. She's got steroid issues. She's got a lot of issues. That's a lot to take on. But who knows? I'm not saying it could never be done."
