This year's MTV Video Music Awards may mark the official return of the girl group the network birthed and witnessed disintegrate on national television.

Aubrey O'Day, Dawn Richard, Shannon Bex and Aundrea Fimbres have kept the buzz stirring around the highly anticipated reunion of their defunct girl group, Danity Kane. They've shared photos of their recent studio sessions together as well as flirted with the possibility of reuniting in one-on-one interviews -- including during IBT's own chat with Dawn Richard.

But for a few hours on Wednesday, all the talk of a DK reunion was validated when a curious countdown timer appeared on the group's relaunched website.

The clock counted down to Aug. 25, which is the same day as the 2013 MTV VMA show. The timer appeared to be set to expire right at the start of the show, hinting at a possible comeback performance as Danity Kane.

The timer was up for just a few hours on Wednesday before it was pulled down, but luckily the blog That Grape Juice was able to grab a screen shot of it.

This countdown clock appeared on the group's site for a few hours on Wednesday before it was taken down. It has now again visible on the groups site, with the group's official Twitter account also linking to the page. DanityKane.com

Seeing that the girls got their big break on MTV's hit series "Making the Band," it wouldn't be a stretch to think they would officially launch their comeback on one of the network's biggest nights.

The blog also grabbed an image from the group's new Twitter account, showing a few particular people the page followed. These individuals included the group's former manager Johnny Wright as well as the production team the Stereotypes -- the hitmakers behind DK's chart-topping single "Damaged." But those follows were quickly pulled from that account as well.

So the curious case of the Danity Kane Reunion continues. But with this latest development, it seems a show-stopping return isn't too far away.

The timer may have been pulled for now. But for DK fans, the countdown continues.

Update:

On Thursday night, the timer was placed back up on Danity Kane's updated website, validating all the talk of the now certain Danity Kane reunion.
