“Destiny” beta players were left hungry for more when the game’s open test ended July 27, and demand for the special edition of the shooter remains high -- with pre-orders selling for hundreds on online auction site eBay.

“Destiny’s” Ghost Edition, which is currently sold out at a number of retailers, contains a real-life replica Ghost (your in-game floating robotic companion), a steel book case, a field guide, “Destiny” postcards and two of the title’s expansion packs.

NeoGAF first pointed out the high price of “Destiny’s” Ghost Edition on eBay, with one unit even selling for more than $1,000. Remember, these are pre-orders, there’s no guarantee either side will follow through on the auction.

Developer Bungie shut down its open “Destiny” beta in late July after opening it to all players on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

"The Beta has been eye-opening so far," Bungie said on July 24. "We’ve watched the world of Destiny come to life. Guardians from every platform have arrived at the Tower from their battles in the wild. We have watched your adventures with great interest, and listened to your feedback. Your missions have provided us with volumes of discoveries we can use to prepare for the launch of Destiny in September."

After the beta closed, the Bellevue, Washington, company revealed more than 4.6 million players participated in the beta, with 853,235 concurrent players and 6.5 million guardians created. An impressive 88,384,720 games were played and more than 777,000 players used the game’s companion app.

“Destiny’s” alpha ran June 12-16 -- and Bungie reported more than 6 million games were played during the test.

“Destiny” takes place 700 years in the future in a post-apocalyptic setting after a lucrative and successful period of exploration and peace called the Golden Age. The game is set in a universe where humans have colonized a number of livable planets in the solar system. But a disastrous event known as “the Collapse” saw the mysterious destruction of these colonies, leaving mankind nearly extinct. When humans attempt to repopulate and recover after the Collapse, aggressive and dangerous alien races are discovered in various towns and cities. Players will have the task of investigating and destroying the aliens before the human race is wiped out.

“Destiny” will launch Sept. 9 for the PS3, PS4, Xbox One and Xbox 360.
