DJI has sent out email invitations to the media for a launch event in May. It’s believed that the company will officially announce the DJI Spark, which was leaked earlier this month.

DJI’s upcoming launch event will take place in New York City on May 24th. The invite included the tagline “Seize The Moment,” and the company is teasing a “BIG” announcement at the said event.

IBT reported earlier this April that a small DJI-branded drone was spotted on the Chinese DJI forums website. Photos of the drone, believed to be called the DJI Spark, show that it’s even smaller that the already compact design of the DJI Mavic Pro. If the company plans on launching the DJI Spark next month, it would become its smallest drone among its lineup.

Based on the leaked photos, the DJI Spark will feature non-extendable arms and brushless motors. The bottom of the Spark comes with a plastic covering leading to speculations that it’s housing sensors for assisting flight. Up front, the Spark also appears to have additional sensors which may mean that it comes with collision detection features like the Mavic Pro.

The DJI Spark is believed to ship without a controller. This means that the drone can be controlled through a user’s smartphone, according to TechCrunch. If this is the case, the DJI Spark would most likely have a more limited range than DJI’s other drones.

The camera onboard the drone only has a vertical gimbal which can only allow up and down camera tilts. It’s been speculated that the Spark might simply be a small drone for taking photo/video selfies.

There’s no word on how much the DJI Spark will cost, but due to its size and set of features, it will surely be cheaper than the $999 DJI Mavic Pro.
