Shortly after “Downward Dog” creators Samm Hodges and Michael Killen announced that ABC will not renew the show for Season 2, series stars Lucas Neff and Barry Rothbart took to social media to address the show’s cancellation.

In an Instagram post, Neff — who plays Jason on the show — wrote that ABC Studios and Legendary Television both know that viewers loved “Downward Dog,” stressing that the reasons for the cancellation were strictly financial. While Neff clearly understands why ABC opted not to renew the show for a sophomore run, he wrote in his post that he definitely won’t discourage fans if they want to contact the network to express how they feel about the cancellation. “Maybe you’ll save us,” the actor wrote. “Crazier things have happened. I mean the Cubs won the World Series last year.”

Neff also made a “crazy” tweet pointing out that the day the show was canceled happened to fall on Bring Your Dog To Work Day.

Meanwhile, just like Neff, Rothbart thanked the fans of the show for their love and support, tweeting that “Downward Dog” has been a “fun ride” for him.

In a separate tweet, Rothbart — who portrays Kevin on the series — asked fans to watch the last two episodes of the season. Rothbart noted that the remaining episodes are “really the best.”

In Neff’s Instagram post, the actor described the final two episodes as “terrific.” “I think some of the better network TV you’ll ever get to see,” he added.

While “Downward Dog” will no longer be back on ABC after Season 1, Killen and Hodges — who also voices Martin on the show — wrote on their Twitter announcement that the series is not completely dead yet. “Obviously this is a hard moment, but we’re not done,” read a portion of the statement from Hodges and Killen. “The crazy amazing love you the fans have shown for DD combined with the critical response make us confident that there is a future and we are committed to finding a new home.”

“Downward Dog,” which also stars Allison Tolman as Nan and Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Jenn, will air its double-episode finale on Tuesday, June 27 starting at 10 p.m. EDT after “The Bachelorette.”
