Anika and Rhonda
Many believe Anika (Grace Gealey, left) pushed Rhonda (Kaitlin Doubleday, right) down a flight of stairs in the fall finale of "Empire." Will Rhonda and her baby survive the fall? FOX/Chuck Hodes

"Empire" shocked fans everywhere in the fall finale when Andre's (Trai Byers) pregnant wife Rhonda (Kaitlin Doubleday) was pushed down a flight of stairs in a brutal scene. When episode 10 came to a close, Rhonda was lying at the foot of the stairs as Andre called her on his cell phone. It was unclear if she survived the fall or not, but it is likely that Anika (Grace Gealey) was the perpetrator behind the cruel incident.

While things were left not looking so good for Andre and Rhonda, Showrunner Ilene Chaiken teased the outcome of the fall to The Hollywood Reporter without getting into specifics. However, the aftermath is going to be a major storyline going into the second half of Season 2.

"Firstly, we hope the baby survives. We hope Rhonda survives. And, depending on the outcome of both those things, how will Rhonda and Andre repair themselves – that's going to be a big part of the story for the second half of the season," Chaiken dished. "Rhonda and Andre figuring out whether this was an accident, a cruel twist of fate, whether it was something that God meant to happen or that somebody did to them for some other nefarious reason is going to be a very big story for us."

In a separate interview with TVLine, Chaiken wouldn't confirm or deny that Anika was the one who pushed her. She understands many believe Anika is the mastermind, but added it's not set in stone.

"We didn’t show you a face. We know, but the world — Andre, Rhonda, the Lyons family — don’t know how Rhonda wound up at the bottom of that staircase. And we want to experience this from their point of view," Chaiken said. "I’m well aware that Anika would be the prime suspect in the minds of the audience. We know we’ve given her some motive, but it’s not an inevitable conclusion that she did it."

For the past two episodes of the show, Rhonda has been telling Anika all about her baby and how Lucious (Terrence Howard) has been a changed man to her due to the idea of having a grandchild. Anika has basically been dragged through the dirt by the Lyon family and has been rejected all season by the family. When she found out she was pregnant with Hakeem's child, she viewed this as an opportunity to finally be embraced by the Lyons. However, it appears she wants her grandchild to be the lone grandchild.

After watching the promo video for episode 11, fans will still not be sure of the consequences of the fall. Andre is shown breaking down into tears at a hospital and is later shown crying in the room he made into a child's nursery at his home.
