Nikki Swango (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) finds herself in a familiar place in next week’s Season 3, episode 7 of “Fargo.”

In the trailer for the episode, Nikki is brought in for questioning by the police following the murder of her fiancé, Ray Stussy (Ewan McGregor). Apparently, Chief Moe Dammik (Shea Whigham) is convinced that Nikki killed Ray, and that led the ex-con back to jail. But it seems that Gloria Burgle (Carrie Coon) thinks that Nikki wasn’t the one responsible for Ray’s murder. “I’m not talking about certainty, I’m saying there’s doubt,” Gloria tells Moe in the preview clip.

In Season 3, episode 6, Emmit Stussy (also played by McGregor) unintentionally killed Ray during an argument over the stamp Ray originally inherited from their late father. Emmit snuck into Ray’s place to return the stamp once and for all. But the siblings got physical with one another when Ray refused to take it back. After Ray shoved the stamp into Emmit’s chest twice, the Parking Lot King of Minnesota lost his cool quite a bit and accidentally hit Ray’s face with the glass-framed stamp. The impact left a shard of glass stuck in Ray’s neck. Apparently, that shard of glass punctured one of his arteries, ultimately causing his death.

Instead of calling Sy Feltz (Michael Stuhlbarg) for help, Emmit surprisingly reached out to V.M. Varga (David Thewlis), who quickly came to the murder scene to clean up his benefactor’s mess. But before letting Emmit leave Ray’s place, Varga made sure that the businessman knows what to tell the police about the incident. “Your brother was killed by his ex-convict girlfriend,” Varga told Emmit. “He’d been abusing her. Beating her in places you don’t show. And tonight she’d had enough, so she cut his throat and watched him bleed.”

As seen in the trailer for episode 7, Emmit is sticking with Varga’s plan. When Winnie Lopez (Olivia Sandoval) informs him about his brother’s death, Emmit acts as if he doesn’t know what really happened. “Are you saying he had a heart attack?” Emmit asks.

“We’re thinking foul play,” Winnie replies.

The synopsis for episode 7 reveals that Varga comes up with an alternative plan to help Emmit get away from Ray’s murder. While it’s unclear what that new plan is, the trailer for the episode shows Emmit suspecting Sy to be Ray’s murderer.

“Fargo” Season 3, episode 7, titled “The Law of Inevitability,” airs on Wednesday, May 31 at 10 p.m. EDT on FX. Watch the trailer below:
